A playful Japanese repair technique where broken ceramics are swapped and combined to create something entirely new. Instead of simply putting one piece back together, you’ll break, swap, and mend, turning fragments into a unique work of art.
Bring a friend, partner, or someone special and swap a fragment with them to create a meaningful, shared piece of art. Your finished tile will carry a physical connection between the two works. You are also welcome to attend alone—we will have many fragments available for you to choose from and incorporate into your piece. This is a very beginner-friendly class. During the workshop, you will:
Break a ceramic tile
Exchange a fragment with another participant (or choose from available fragments)
Reassemble the tile using the Yobitsugi method
Leave the cracks visible as part of the design
Highlight the repaired lines with gold
In this process, we do not completely fill the gaps—the cracks remain raw and expressive, celebrating imperfection and connection. Come join us and experience the unique art of Yobitsugi, and create a one-of-a-kind Kintsugi tile.
Your instructor, Emi, studied traditional Kintsugi in Nagoya and Gifu, Japan — and brings that sensibility into every workshop, blending cultural depth with calming, hands-on creativity.
